China threatened by farmland contamination

China threatened by farmland contamination: Beijing (UPI) Jun 12, 2012

Much of China's agricultural soil is contaminated by pollutants, including arsenic and heavy metals, that pose a threat to the country's food production, experts warn.
Zhou Jianmin, director of the China Soil Association, estimates that 1-10th of China's farmland is contaminated, The Guardian reports. But some estimates range as high as 40 percent and a government assessment isn't likel

Knotty proteins present new puzzle

Knotty proteins present new puzzle: Houston TX (SPX) Jun 13, 2012

Strings of all kinds, when jostled, wind up in knots. It turns out that happens even when the strings are long strands of molecules that make up proteins. A new study by scientists at Rice University and elsewhere examines structures of proteins that not only twist and turn themselves into knots, but also form slipknots that, if anybody could actually see them, might look like shoelaces for cell

Diet prevents Polio

Medical science has been able to prevent diphtheria, smallpox, and typhoid fever by vaccination.
We have been able to reduce the mortality from tuberculosis by pasteurization of milk and improved general hygiene. Typhoid fever and cholera have been prevented by chlorination of water and proper sewage disposal. Humans have been protected against these diseases because they have been artificially immunized and because their environment has been controlled to some extent, and not because the body’s inherent ability to prevent infection has been built up.

It is far more important to enable the human to maintain his natural powers against infection than it is to keep bacteria and viruses away from his door, especially since we do not have vaccines available for many common infections. I do not believe that Nature over intended that man should suffer sickness, crippling, and death through infections. From my observations and studies in human nutrition I have become convinced that Nature originally did endow us with natural powers of protection and that we have lost these powers through errors in diet.

Enfermedades

In the past few decades, average Arctic temperatures have warmed roughly 3.6 degrees Fahrenheit (2 degrees Celsius); average temperatures in Antarctica have warmed slightly less than 1.8 degrees Fahrenheit (1 degree Celsius). if the eastern and western Antarctic ice shelves were to melt completely, they would raise sea levels by as much as 230 feet (70 meters); the collapse of smaller shelves like Larsen B has sped up the flow of glaciers behind them into the sea, contributing to the creeping up of high tide levels around the world. And that's likely to get worse before it gets better."There will be continued residual warming no matter what greenhouse gas reductions we make," Monaghan warns. "We really need to pay closer attention to what is going on with this ice sheet."

menos hielo, mas metano, mas calor, menos hielo, menos hielo, mas metano....

Methane is the second most important greenhouse gas in the atmosphere after carbon dioxide, accounting for nearly 20 per cent of global warming since the industrial revolution.
Dr Fraser says that recent analyses of global data by CSIRO and collaborators at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Scripps Institution of Oceanography and the University of Bristol suggest that the methane increase is, at least in part, due to methane releases in the high latitudes of the Northern Hemisphere."Such increases have been predicted as rapid Arctic ice melting creates more high latitude wetland sources," says Dr Fraser.

China y la comida de hoy ...

China accused of covering up outbreak of maggots in oranges. According to state media, a farm in Sichuan, in the south-west of the country, first reported its crop of mandarin oranges had failed on September 21, and fruit fly was diagnosed. But though surveys found orchards across major mandarin-producing counties of Sichuan had been affected, the provincial authorities did not publicly confirm the outbreak until after a local newspaper had broken the story on October 4. http://tinyurl.com/5z6s4w

Three more Chinese brands of chicken's eggs have been found to contain high levels of the chemical melamine. Tests in Hong Kong first revealed dangerously high levels of the substance in eggs from a mainland supplier earlier this week. Local officials say melamine was illegally mixed into chicken feed to make eggs look richer in protein than they were, but central authorities have not commented. http://tinyurl.com/6cemdq

Cadbury pulls melamine-laced chocolate from China.
Cadbury, the British chocolate manufacturer, is pulling chocolate made in China, citing melamine concerns. Additionally, Kraft Foods, makers of Oreo cookies, and Mars, makers of M&M's and Snickers, are complying with an Indonesian recall for melamine-tainted chocolate in samples of their products made in China. It is important to note that none of these products have made their way to the United States and that stricter controls are in place.
