In the past few decades, average Arctic temperatures have warmed roughly 3.6 degrees Fahrenheit (2 degrees Celsius); average temperatures in Antarctica have warmed slightly less than 1.8 degrees Fahrenheit (1 degree Celsius). if the eastern and western Antarctic ice shelves were to melt completely, they would raise sea levels by as much as 230 feet (70 meters); the collapse of smaller shelves like Larsen B has sped up the flow of glaciers behind them into the sea, contributing to the creeping up of high tide levels around the world. And that's likely to get worse before it gets better."There will be continued residual warming no matter what greenhouse gas reductions we make," Monaghan warns. "We really need to pay closer attention to what is going on with this ice sheet."

menos hielo, mas metano, mas calor, menos hielo, menos hielo, mas metano....
Methane is the second most important greenhouse gas in the atmosphere after carbon dioxide, accounting for nearly 20 per cent of global warming since the industrial revolution.
Dr Fraser says that recent analyses of global data by CSIRO and collaborators at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Scripps Institution of Oceanography and the University of Bristol suggest that the methane increase is, at least in part, due to methane releases in the high latitudes of the Northern Hemisphere."Such increases have been predicted as rapid Arctic ice melting creates more high latitude wetland sources," says Dr Fraser.

China accused of covering up outbreak of maggots in oranges. According to state media, a farm in Sichuan, in the south-west of the country, first reported its crop of mandarin oranges had failed on September 21, and fruit fly was diagnosed. But though surveys found orchards across major mandarin-producing counties of Sichuan had been affected, the provincial authorities did not publicly confirm the outbreak until after a local newspaper had broken the story on October 4. http://tinyurl.com/5z6s4w
Three more Chinese brands of chicken's eggs have been found to contain high levels of the chemical melamine. Tests in Hong Kong first revealed dangerously high levels of the substance in eggs from a mainland supplier earlier this week. Local officials say melamine was illegally mixed into chicken feed to make eggs look richer in protein than they were, but central authorities have not commented. http://tinyurl.com/6cemdq

Additionally, Kraft Foods, makers of Oreo cookies, and Mars, makers of M&M's and Snickers, are complying with an Indonesian recall for melamine-tainted chocolate in samples of their products made in China. It is important to note that none of these products have made their way to the United States and that stricter controls are in place.
