Diet prevents Polio

Medical science has been able to prevent diphtheria, smallpox, and typhoid fever by vaccination.
We have been able to reduce the mortality from tuberculosis by pasteurization of milk and improved general hygiene. Typhoid fever and cholera have been prevented by chlorination of water and proper sewage disposal. Humans have been protected against these diseases because they have been artificially immunized and because their environment has been controlled to some extent, and not because the body’s inherent ability to prevent infection has been built up.

It is far more important to enable the human to maintain his natural powers against infection than it is to keep bacteria and viruses away from his door, especially since we do not have vaccines available for many common infections. I do not believe that Nature over intended that man should suffer sickness, crippling, and death through infections. From my observations and studies in human nutrition I have become convinced that Nature originally did endow us with natural powers of protection and that we have lost these powers through errors in diet.

Tainted heparin seized from Ohio company

Federal drug regulators have seized batches of the tainted blood thinner heparin from a Cincinnati manufacturer that used a Chinese-made ingredient linked to 81 U.S. deaths earlier this year. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) said yesterday that it took 11 lots of heparin from Celsus Laboratories that was contaminated with over-sulfated chondroitin sulfate (OSCS), a chemical used only to make fake blood thinner. The ingredient mimics heparin's anti-clotting properties but can cause severe allergic reactions and dangerously low blood pressure, according to reports the agency received beginning in January. http://tinyurl.com/5ccunh

Postal Anthrax Aftermath
Keith Rhodes, the Government Accountability Office’s chief technologist, told a congressional hearing in October 2007 that “we are at greater risk today” than before of an infectious disease epidemic because of the great increase in biolaboratories and the absence of oversight they receive. In the past six years, says Rutgers University microbiologist Richard Ebright, “the Bush administration has driven a 20- to 30-fold increase in the number of institutions and individuals with access to live, virulent bioweapons agents,” to about 400 institutions and 15,000 people. Every one of them, he claims, “is a potential source of an attack like the 2001 attack. http://tinyurl.com/6b8a9n

Levels of the greenhouse gas methane begin to increase again
Since early 2007 the balance has been upset, according to a paper on the new findings being published this week in Geophysical Review Letters. The paper's lead authors, postdoctoral researcher Matthew Rigby and Ronald Prinn, the TEPCO Professor of Atmospheric Chemistry in MIT's Department of Earth, Atmospheric and Planetary Science, say this imbalance has resulted in several million metric tons of additional methane in the atmosphere. Methane is produced by wetlands, rice paddies, cattle, and the gas and coal industries, and is destroyed by reaction with the hydroxyl free radical (OH), often referred to as the atmosphere's "cleanser." Pound for pound, methane is 25 times more powerful as a greenhouse gas than carbon dioxide, the situation will require careful monitoring in the near future. http://tinyurl.com/6by2kr

Indian temperature rise 'will exceed projected rainfall'
(NEW DELHI) One of India's leading climate change scientists says the country needs to address the impact of climate change on its agriculture, water resources and health "right away", as projected temperature rise will far exceed the increase in rainfall by the end of the century. "Studies have shown that even a one degree rise in temperature can cause a ten per cent reduction in [crop] yield. And we are talking about three degrees change expected in future in India," http://tinyurl.com/6om7g8

Mercury pollution and the Northeast states
In the Northeast, elevated levels of mercury in certain fish species have resulted in statewide fish consumption advisories covering more than 10,000 lakes, ponds, and reservoirs, and over 46,000 river miles in the region. The persistent need for these advisories comes despite nearly a decade of work within the Northeast that substantially reduced regional mercury emissions and discharges. Multiple research studies have shown that the majority of mercury in the states’ waters now comes from out-of-region sources such as coal-fired power plants, whose mercury emissions drift to the region on air currents and then fall directly into waterways or get carried by runoff into them. http://tinyurl.com/68rouk

Enfermedades

A third of all commercially harvested seafood goes to animals, which could undermine the entire oceanic food web. Adam Hinterthuer reports
Farmers are fattening up their animals with anchovies and sardines at an alarming rate. In fact, one-third of the world's commercially harvested seafood now is used to feed pigs, chickens and farm-raised fish.Researchers from the University of British Columbia and Stony Brook University spent nine years compiling data on how humans caught, processed and consumed seafood. They report that 37 percent of all the fish caught are small forage fish like sardines and anchovies. And 90 percent of that catch ends up as fishmeal or fish oil, used primarily in animal feed. Forage fish are popular because they can be caught in massive quantities and sold at cheap prices. But, researchers say, these fish support the marine food web, and they’re nutritious staples for coastal-dwelling people in developing countries. So it might be time to rethink the menu. If you feed a pig a fish, it'll eat for a day. But if you feed fish to millions of pigs, well, you might just run out of fish.

Every year 130 million tons of America’s trash ends up in landfills.
Together the dumps emit more of the greenhouse gas methane than any other human-related source. Engineers have developed an efficient torch for blasting garbage with a stream of
superheated gas, known as plasma. When trash is dropped into a chamber and heated
to 10,000 degrees Fahrenheit, its organic components—food, fluids, paper—vaporize into a hot, pressurized gas, which turns a turbine to generate electricity. Emissions are far lower than in standard incineration, and the process reduces landfill volume and methane release

Prince Charles has called for rich countries to pay an annual "utility bill" for the benefits given to the world by its rainforests.

Speaking in the Indonesian capital, Jakarta, the prince called rainforests the "world's greatest public utility"."The rest of us have to start paying for it, just as we do for water, gas and electricity." As developed nations were the driving force behind their destruction, through a demand for products like beef, palm oil, soya and logs, they should be billed for their protection, he said.

Bill Clinton: "We Blew It" On Global Food.
Today's global food crisis shows "we all blew it, including me when I was president," by treating food crops as commodities instead of as a vital right of the world's poor, Bill Clinton told a U.N. gathering on Thursday. Clinton took aim at decades of international policymaking by the World Bank, the International Monetary Fund and others, encouraged by the U.S., that pressured Africans in particular into dropping government subsidies for fertilizer, improved seed and other farm inputs, in economic "structural adjustments" required to win northern aid. Africa's food self-sufficiency subsequently declined and food imports rose.

Many pesticides in EU may damage human brain: study
OSLO (Reuters) - Many pesticides used in the European Union may damage brain growth in fetuses and young children, according to a study published on Friday. "Laboratory experimental studies using model compounds suggest that many pesticides currently used in Europe...can cause neuro-developmental toxicity," Grandjean and two colleagues in Denmark wrote in the journal Environmental Health. The developing brain of the fetus and young child is far more sensitive than the adult brain to disruptions from chemicals, they said. Pesticides used on food crops in the EU exceed 140,000 tonnes a year, corresponding to 280 grams (10 ounces) per EU citizen, the study said.

Bush team rushes environment policy changes
WASHINGTON (Reuters) - As the U.S. presidential candidates sprint toward the finish line, the Bush administration is also sprinting to enact environmental policy changes before leaving power. Whether it's getting wolves off the Endangered Species List, allowing power plants to operate near national parks, loosening regulations for factory farm waste or making it easier for mountaintop coal-mining operations, these proposed changes have found little favor with environmental groups. The Bush team has urged that these regulations be issued no later than Saturday, so they can be put in effect by the time President George W. Bush leaves office on January 20. If they are in effect then, it will be hard for the next administration to undo them, and in any case, this may not be the top priority for a new president. Industry is likely to benefit if Bush's rules on the environment become effective, Madia said. "Whether it's the electricity industry or the mining industry or the agriculture industry, this is going to remove government restrictions on their activity and in turn they're going to be allowed to pollute more and that ends up harming the public," Madia said in a telephone interview.

In the past few decades, average Arctic temperatures have warmed roughly 3.6 degrees Fahrenheit (2 degrees Celsius); average temperatures in Antarctica have warmed slightly less than 1.8 degrees Fahrenheit (1 degree Celsius). if the eastern and western Antarctic ice shelves were to melt completely, they would raise sea levels by as much as 230 feet (70 meters); the collapse of smaller shelves like Larsen B has sped up the flow of glaciers behind them into the sea, contributing to the creeping up of high tide levels around the world. And that's likely to get worse before it gets better."There will be continued residual warming no matter what greenhouse gas reductions we make," Monaghan warns. "We really need to pay closer attention to what is going on with this ice sheet."

Methane is the second most important greenhouse gas in the atmosphere after carbon dioxide, accounting for nearly 20 per cent of global warming since the industrial revolution.
Dr Fraser says that recent analyses of global data by CSIRO and collaborators at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Scripps Institution of Oceanography and the University of Bristol suggest that the methane increase is, at least in part, due to methane releases in the high latitudes of the Northern Hemisphere."Such increases have been predicted as rapid Arctic ice melting creates more high latitude wetland sources," says Dr Fraser.

China accused of covering up outbreak of maggots in oranges. According to state media, a farm in Sichuan, in the south-west of the country, first reported its crop of mandarin oranges had failed on September 21, and fruit fly was diagnosed. Three more Chinese brands of chicken's eggs have been found to contain high levels of the chemical melamine.
